Estates

At SKD Law, I assist individuals with estate administration, commonly known as "probate" or "letters of administration".

The administration of a loved one’s affairs after their passing can be a complicated and daunting process. Many people named as estate trustees or executors in a Will have no training or experience in the role, and the range of duties can feel overwhelming. Others are unsure how to begin when a loved one has died without a Will. On top of that, estate administration can sometimes involve difficult conversations or disputes with heirs and other interested parties.

This work requires tact, compassion, and strong legal skills. Over time, I have become increasingly passionate about helping people navigate this process, and I’ve developed deep experience in the area. I’m also one of the few lawyers in the Northwest Territories who regularly does this work - and I do so at a reasonable rate to keep it accessible.

I work closely with my clients to guide them through their duties and responsibilities as estate administrators or executors, providing support every step of the way. I can assist with:

  • Interpreting a Will or trust

  • Preparing estate administration / probate application

  • Advising on estate trustee compensation and passing of account

  • Advising on obtaining clearance certificates from the Canada Revenue Agency

My goal is to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on honouring your loved one’s wishes while meeting all legal requirements.
